  Hastings Windmills

By Mary Harding

“Yeakell and Gardeners Map of 1785 marks another windmill nearby, to the north-west of St. Michael's Hill. It appears to stand on the site of Hastings Museum at John's Place. According to BRETT, there was a mill owned by Mr. DEUDNEY, which was rented by William RELF, though whether the statement refers to this windmill or another one is not clear. There is a reference to William RELF in the Town records of 1800:

“a weight taken from William RELF, Miller and Baker, was presented as being deficient when the court, on examining into the same, ordered it to be forfeited and the said RELF to pay a fine of 20 shillings”.

Paul Lavallie, #200.
